Why are the French so productive?

June 25, 2018

With France taking the lead in Europe and getting some good press in international media, this podcast should interest just about anybody who likes business or economic news (or lives in France).

This worksheet is suitable for online teaching, although you can use it in a traditional classroom, too. You will just need to do exactly what you would do with an online student – ask your learners to listen to the podcast at home as part of their homework. Asking them to focus for nearly half an hour on a radio show in class is hardly a good idea, unless you prefer to split the broadcast up into several short clips (up to 2,5 minutes for intermediate students and twice as long for upper-intermediate and advanced learners). However, the latter option slows the whole process down and your students might lose interest very quickly.

The last exercise tackles the first and second conditionals introduced with example sentences from the podcast. You can either use this task as an opportunity to revise this part of the English grammar or as an introduction to more thorough grammar practice - the task will make for a smooth transition then.

If you hand out the worksheet to your learner(s) to do at home but they are not used to listening to 30-minute long recordings in English (or in their native language for that matter!), you can encourage them to give it a try by telling them to listen to the podcast during their daily commute, as they make dinner or on a Sunday walk. In my experience, even the busiest professionals find it hard to find an excuse for not listening to the show once I make these suggestions.
